About Systematic English Language Development
E.L. Achieve’s Systematic ELD offers a robust K–12 English language development curriculum for linguistically diverse students learning English as a new language. Intentionally designed to provide foundational and academic English instruction, it is interactive, student centered, standards aligned, and specific to students’ identified proficiency level. ELD classes serve as an opportunity for students to gain tools that empower them to take charge of and fully participate in their learning.
The Systematic ELD curriculum:
- Puts language learning and exploration squarely in the foreground and includes ongoing assessment to gauge application of taught language in different contexts. This drives instructional planning to assure that language learning is on track.
- Follows a developmental continuum (scope and sequence) of language skills identified in ELD standards and within the curriculum itself.
- Uses a functional language approach organized around essential purposes for communication.
– Language tasks are highly applicable to real-world and academic interactions that students must adroitly navigate.
– Instruction draws students’ attention to a variety of aspects of English (e.g., rhythm and cadence, grammatical patterns, vocabulary, colloquial expressions, rules of discourse, formal and informal registers).
- Emphasizes oral language development, and includes substantive oral and written practice applying learning in meaningful ways to build confidence, accuracy, and fluency.
- Groups students during this part of the instructional day by proficiency level as determined by multiple assessment sources, such as: formal state-adopted language tests; informal measures, including the Listen for Hallmarks, analysis of writing samples, or recorded observations; and curriculum-based assessment results.
- Develops an in-depth understanding of how English works so students can make conscious decisions about how to communicate their thinking.
Note: eHandbooks are only available to current partner districts. The eBook license is not sold separately. The eBook license is ONLY sold with the purchase of a hard copy.
