The Constructing Meaning (CM) Social Studies Module is built on the premise that language should be supported and developed in all content areas throughout the school day, and that CM provides the process and tools for weaving language instruction into content-area teaching. By no means does this integrated approach to language development replace the need for dedicated, explicit ELD instruction, but it is a necessary component of a comprehensive approach to English learner instruction. The lesson models how to support English learners in using the language they will need to demonstrate the application of Common Core standards, and by doing so, addresses the Next Generation ELD Standards
